Because this coin was used for everyday transactions, it underpinned the livelihoods of commoners. Previously, the currency in circulation consisted largely of foreign coins and privately minted tokens produced in each region, which threw the monetary economy into confusion. With the issuance of this coin, copper coinage was unified under the Edo shogunate. It then circulated for 240 years and can truly be called the representative currency of the Edo period.
